Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy can be
defined as the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic
essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind
and spirit. It is a natural, non invasive treatment system designed to affect
the whole person not just the symptom or disease, and to assist the body's
natural ability to balance, regulate, heal and maintain itself. Since the
beginning of Aromatherapy, it adopted an holistic approach which encompasses the
body, the mind and the spirit (energy).
As an holistic therapy Aromatherapy is
able to work on several levels of the individuals well being. Aromatherapy is
the practice of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for
psychological and physical well-being. Essential oils are highly concentrated
aromatic extracts which are distilled from a variety of aromatic plant material
including grasses, leaves, flowers, needles & twigs, peel of fruit, wood and
roots. The modes of
application of aromatherapy include:
-
aerial diffusion for
environmental fragrance or aerial disinfection
-
direct inhalation for
respiratory disinfection, decongestion, expectoration as well as psychological
effects.
-
topical applications
for general massage, baths, compresses, therapeutic skin care.
Aromatherapy is used for a vast array of
ailments. It can reduce stress, enhance
relaxation, and relieve anxiety and
other emotional disorders. Even more
amazing therapeutic uses of oils include
treatments for arthritis, postpartum
discomfort, and impotence. Aromatherapy
is yet another modality that uses pure
essential oils in the co-treatment of
many illnesses such as sinus problems,
headaches, fungal infections, skin
disorders and sores, and much more.
Essential oils are most
usually administered either by diffusion
into the air, nasal inhalers, and body
soaks. Essential oils have been proven
to be effective against MRSA and VREC,
both resistant forms of bacteria that
can slow healing of wounds.
